[Andy Crowson] “Can anyone tell me if FCP7 is any less cumbersome than FCP6 when it comes to capturing video? I hope there has been some work done on this…

Capturing video is the easiest thing there is in FCP. Has been since version 1.

It can’t make up for operator error though.

Got to disagree… Premier interface is much more user-friendly, however powerful FCP is…

Ok, question. how long have you been using Premiere?

How long have you been using FCP?

If you’ve been using one for a long time and have to switch to another, it takes a while to figure out the buttons. FCP’s interface is incredibly user friendly, it just doesn’t operate exactly like any other NLE be it Premiere, Avid, Quantel or any others.

The Media 100 interface that I used for 6 years prior to FCP was much more simpler and easy to use than FCP. But it was also a much more limited software so I spent about 2 weeks really learning the FCP interface and in about 3 months I didn’t miss Media 100 at all.

That’s completely a matter of personal preference and experience. I think the Premiere is way, way too cluttered with tiny little buttons, but that’s just my view.

    All the best,

I guess what I’ve found so far is that the jog and shuttle buttons are not as responsive as I want them to be, the logging and capturing process does seem rather cumbersome, and the Help button is not that helpful really! I know it’s a fantastic tool. I know FCP is amazing, but the getting to understand it thing is not as intuititive a process I was hoping for. It’s like the brilliant philosopher Wittgenstein – he was great at Mathematics – unbelievable brain – but was a useless teacher, because he couldn’t get down to the level of mere mortals… Entry into FCP is a big jump…

And a month from now you’ll be wondering what all your fuss was about.

Yeah, well, you gotta wonder why there is such a huge forum society – not all plain sailing if you don’t live, at and breathe FCP. And what’s wrong with a little kicking and screaming?

Log and shuttle buttons? Really? Are you controlling the media in FCP or tape? If the latter response is a function of the device not the application. If the former, don’t use them. Use JKL.

This is just the capturing stage, so I’m using the jog and shuttle to get some accuracy with logging. JKL – yes, that’s a bit of magic, I have to agree…
