  • Interesting NYT story today, Intel to shift to low power forget speed

In todays New York Times there is a story regarding Intels new direction. The search for speed is over and has taken a back seat to low power. Intel is about to learn an important lesson, speed is life, and stock prices can go down.

Thanks Steve Jobs for moving us into the slow lane.

The story has much more to do with new CORE products and multimedia in the home but that shift from speed to power hurts. Just when we thought we were about to speed up and ride the mighty Intel speed freek thing, we hit a speed bump.

Will Intel still work for speed? Yes, will it come as fast as before NO. Will AMD eat their lunch, YUM, you bet.

The story goes on to say that Apple went with Intel because Microsoft went with the IBM powerPC for the Box.

Once again thanks Steve, your phyco relationship with Bill Gates will soon cost us more money.

I work with lots of different G5 set ups running FCP and I find no meaningful difference in speed from almost all G5s released in the last 18 months with the exception of the latest top of the line (WOW). In other words, 10% here and there means nothing. I thought intel was going to give us a real kick, maybe it still will, but it is my guess that the top of the line G5 of today will be similar in speed to the new Intel Macs. Once again begging the question, WHY!

    I hope I am wrong.

The story also talks about next months MacWorld convention.

There’s always been a difference between what the average consumer computer gets vs. high end workstations so on the consumer side, I can see how speed has pretty much plateau’d and is irrelevant. All most consumers are looking for is the cheapest machine that can burn CD’s and DVD’s.

Hard core gamers pay top dollar for top of the line video / graphics machines which are pretty much the same machines that are used in video / graphics production.

So on the consumer side of things, yeah, speed is not very important any more. But for the business workstations, speed will still be of the essence and hence, they will continue to carry a much higher price tag.

Yes, and IBM could not make enough processors for both the X-Box 360 and the new Mac’s and could not get to the 3Ghz speed fast enough either. Have you noticed any articles about how scarce the X-Box 360 is? Have you wondered why they’re so scarce? Because processor production is very very very slow.

Intel’s processor production well exceeds IBM’s hence Apple’s decision to go with Intel.

From what I have read IBM has always looked down their noses at Apple. So Apple wants chips, so what, you might hear them say. They (IBM) are dedicated to the powerPC for everything, high performance is essential to them and for them.

More and more the IBM multi chip (powerPC) based computers are setting recorder for speed, but they did not seem to care about making a low power version for a laptop. For Apple laptops are where the money is at, (profit) yes iPods but i am talking about a cpu centric computer. With IBM going for high performance multi-chip systems (running their own operating systems) Apple was right to look elsewhere, but, if it is true that the tipping point came because of Microsoft and the XBox, I wonder just what gust of wind will come along and drag us somewhere else. In other words, what will cause us to trash the next investment because of a whim?

While Intel has far more capacity to make chips I think IBM could have supplied to everyone if they wanted to, outsourcing happens with chips too.

I have read that Xbox has or soon will go on sale in Japan, millions are at the dock or on their way.

Does anyone think the giant of chips is going to care what Apple wants them to do when they want it?

With that said, I love the products are recognize that the software side of Apple as the best of the best, we are in a golden era with Apple and their fantastic software, but this constant darts in the air strategy makes me dislike the company.

Yeah, that’s part of their strategy, release in US, Europe and Japan almost simultaneously, which is another reason why they are so limited at the moment. I haven’t seen anything that says “millions are at the dock or on their way.” What I have read a lot of are that production is extremely limited at the moment and many units are being returned becuase they don’t function correctly.

As for Intel, I believe we’re going to see some of their best stuff start appearing in the Macs because they are used in so many high end applications and factilities.
