I’m cutting a doc that has mainly been shot on HDV.
we are cutting in DV, and it will be finished in some form of HD.
FCP all the way. (and 25fps all the way, too)

my question, however is about some archival material we have which is on VCD, believe it or not.

it’s a non-controllable source, we have a lot of discs, and i don’t want to have to capture the clips more than once,
so i’m hoping to capture via HDMI to some decent quality codec that i can also offline with.
(i can capture to DV with my current gear, but i imagine that’s about the worst path to go down!)

    i’m liking Apple’s Prores as a solution
& from the Blackmagiuc site, (which i just checked) this seems possible.

one question i have is about RATIO.
    this footage is all 4/3.
can i capture it to an HD frame size in some form of PILLAR-BOXED format?
or will it capture stretched, (then i squeeze in FCP)?

or how about i capture to a Standard Def form of ProRes,
then blow up in the on-line?

anyone done this sort of stuff?

thanks in advance for any advice & insight,
    nick
