Looking at purchasing another Mac for an additional editing system. I loved my G5 tower in the day, I like my Core duo… would really like to get an Intel i7 8 core… I’m feeling though that the way technology is moving and the way the industry is changing, man, you spend $5k-6k on a new Mac tower and display and in 2 years it’s no longer worth close to what you paid for it. wonder if it’s more prudent to just get a quad core iMac 27″ and replace it every 2 years.. any thoughts?

I bought a MacPro in Jan of 2008…and it still is a powerhouse. Beats the pants off my producers new MacBook Pro. And holds it’s own against the new iMacs…but they render slightly faster.

But know that new machines have the new OS…LION…and not every app works under that OS>

i actually bought an Intel i5 macbook pro last year for field stuff and like it. but you always have that desire to have a real extreme powerhouse machine as your main editor.. but yeah, I agree the macbooks and iMacs are pretty powerful. other than some limitations with connectivity.

    Brian –
I bought a Nehalem Mac Pro a few weeks before the Westmere Mac Pro’s came out. I still use it, without issue with OS X Lion and Server.

But what does all of this really mean ? It means that if you cannot generate enough income to pay for your equipment within ONE YEAR, then you should not be buying any equipment. This applies to everything from RED cameras, to disk drives to computers (including PC’s) – everything is changing faster than ever BUT everything is CHEAPER than ever before – so if you “don’t like the heat – then get out of the kitchen”, because it ain’t slowing down any time soon.
In 2 years, Thunderbolt will be everywhere, and 2 years after that SSD’s will be the price of SATA drives, and everything you own – no matter what you own – will be obsolete.
