Installing Shake after FCS3 on SL?
Posted by Brad Bussé on September 25, 2009 at 9:27 pmI’ve just installed Snow Leopard. I had read here that you need to install Shake prior to FCS 3 or it will overwrite certain files with older versions. I can’t currently locate my Shake install DVD but I want to get started on the FCS install. Can anyone tell me exactly which files need to be reinstalled from FCS if I were to install Shake last?

September 25, 2009 at 10:33 pmI had this experience with FCS2. Smoothcam was lost from FCP6, not sure what else. Motion and Compressor wouldn’t open at all. Aperture was also lost.
Uninstalling FCS and re-installing over the top of Shake didn’t work. In the end the only fix was a complete system re-install. It would have been nice if Apple had warned about this problem in the “read first” instructions, I would have waited until I’d finished the almost completed project I was working on in FCS. I know you shouldn’t upgrade FCS during a project but Shake is not part of the suite so I thought it would be okay.

I’m FCS2 and I have Shake installed on top.
I have no one of the symptoms that you describe.
10b was broken in Shake and fixed after more than one year, but this didn’t affect FCS.
If there is a problem now with Shake, I’m afraid it can take long to get fixed. Apple doesn’t care about Shake.

September 26, 2009 at 10:28 amNo problems with Shake just so long as you install it before FCS2.
Apparently if installed after FCS2 it over writes some newer shared FCS frameworks with it’s own older ones.

September 27, 2009 at 1:47 pmI seem to recall that when one installed Shake one could install Qmaster with it. Maybe if you’re installing Shake after FCS, you should not let it install Qmaster. That may prevent Compressor from breaking.
Not sure about the Smoothcam though.
But if FCS is more important to you, you should not install Shake on top of it.

September 27, 2009 at 1:53 pmYou are right about that Neil.
Used to happens that the QMaster version packed with Shake was older than the current for Compressor.
Keep the later QMaster version.
