Installing Avid DNxHD in Vegas 7
Posted by Philippe Orlando on May 19, 2013 at 7:48 pmHello,
I have Vegas 7. I know, I know, it’s an old version, but guess what, it works for what I’m doing, I know it, I love it and I don’t need to upgrade. I’ve been transcoding HDV footage from my XH a1 into cineform Neo HDV. I’ve downloaded the Avid DNdHD, extracted the files and I have no idea how to install this into Vegas so I’d see it when I render into a quicktime movie to give to anybody who has a mac. Also, is that codec better than Cineform? I guess it’s the only way to give my file to somebody who has FCP, correct? So how do I install this codec in Vegas?
Thanks

May 20, 2013 at 8:08 amIn later versions of Vegas once the DNxHD has been extracted you simply re-boot the computer and you’ll find the codec under the Quicktime render settings.
Don’t know if this will work for v7 but take a look. It might already be there.
Just to be clear. You go Render as: then find Quicktime, customise Template, on the ‘Video Format’ drop down one of the options should be AVID DNxHD codec.

This is the key part. You need to make your own custom template in order to use Avid DNxHD in Vegas Pro. I have a tutorial on my web site that shows you how:

May 21, 2013 at 1:07 amHello John,
I’m following your tutorial.
When I get to this part: ” In the Custom Settings window, (1) select High Definition (1920×1080) as the Frame size, (2) select 29.970000 as the Frame rate, (3) select Upper filed first as the Field order, and (4) select Avid DNxHD Codec as the Video format. Finally (5) press the Configure… button to set the Avid DNxHD codec settings.”I don’t have in (4) the option to select Avid DNxHD Codec as the video format. I did download the codec and extracted the zip file on my hard drive, but the codec doesn’t appear in Vegas 7 though.

May 21, 2013 at 1:59 amMike, I did that, and as I said to right of VIDEO FORMAT and to the left of CONFIGURE I see all my codecs available, including the cineform I bought, but not the Avid DNXHD

It sounds like you are doing everything right so my only suggestion is that, if this is a one-off project, it might be worth downloading the Sony Vegas 12 trial version and see if it works with that.
You can always go back to version 7 after the trial period runs out. You don’t need to uninstall v7 to run v12 (unlike FCPX and 7)
I think that once you have used v12 you’ll want to upgrade though!

You said that you extracted the ZIP file. I hate to have to ask the obvious but did you then run the installer? Also, you need to install the codec while Vegas Pro is NOT running.
Here is what you should have downloaded:
Once you download the AvidCodecsLESetup.zip file and unzip it, you will have a file called AvidCodecsLESetup.exe. That’s the installer. Run this installer while Vegas Pro is not running. You can’t install it while Vegas is running and expect Vegas to see the new codec. After installing the codec, start Vegas Pro and it will show up in the list of QuickTime codecs.

What I had downloaded before was totally different from the link you provided. I went to the link you gave me and I’m totally all set. It worked beautifully. I’m so glad.
Before I did end up with something called DNxHD but there was no installer, nothing.
No I see all the Avid codec in the pull down menu, including the DNxHD, great! Thanks so much.Simon, I’m still going to test drive Vegas 12, just to see how better it is.
