installation and working discs
Posted by Carlo Ferraro on September 14, 2008 at 11:32 amI am a newcomer to Mac after 25 years on Windows (Vegas 8.0 Pro) so I am still confused about how Mac handles the files.
I installled FCP and it asked me about the discs to work with. As a novice I put the same SATA II array I used on Windows. After a while it hung up and if I tried to open it again it tries to load but then again at some point it hangs up. I prepared a new fresh array of disks formatted on mac but the problem persists. I reinstalled FCP over the old files but it does not work either. Any hint, please?

September 14, 2008 at 12:39 pmHi Carlo,
You need to format your media discs as Extended MacOX “Not Journaled”.
Make sure that you can read and write: Click the HD icon, Comm-i. Will open the Info window. Look in Share & Permissions.
Open the FC’s Users Preferences and set the Scratch Disk as you need.

September 14, 2008 at 2:05 pmExplain a little better what you mean by hang up. I think that you may be experiences similar issues to what a lot of other people are experiencing and that is problems with the driver for the esata card on your MBP
Here is a previous post on the issue https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1002756
The issue stems from the chip that is used in every esata card I can find for the mac, they say that the driver for the chip is good with leopard, but the driver was made a year before leopard was even released.
I’ve had issues where that bad driver has caused FCP to crash, restart the computer, and kernel panic. It ONLY happens when I use cards that use that driver. I have had to resort to using FW800 in the until the chip manufacturer gets off there behind and updates the driver.

September 14, 2008 at 2:54 pmHi Zane,
I haven’t think about the eSATA because I’m working with the LaCie since few months and not a single problem.
Carlo,
Take it easy and don’t be so impulsive reinstalling everything at the first problem.
Try to isolate the issue. First make sure that FC works OK with the default Scratch Disk (your system driver). Then try with the external HDs.
At the moment you have to make sure that you have de-installed FC as needs to be. Look for the FC Troubleshooting docs in the Apple support and fallow the steps.
Cheers,
rafaelBTW you can download he driver here: https://www.siliconimage.com/support/index.aspx?pid=0&cid=0&

September 14, 2008 at 3:21 pmThere is no way to uninstall Final Cut Studio from your system drive. There are simply too many resources that are installed all over the system. To ensure a good solid reinstall, you need to reformat your system drive and install the application from scratch.

September 14, 2008 at 9:44 pmWell, I cleaned as recommended in Apple support, installed again FCP, downloaded the siliconimage3132r5 driver, installed it and the problem persists. After loading some features of FCP it stops loading and fades. I gess this means reinstalling the OS.
A question: Installing the OS should not affect the windows partition. Am I right? I am backing up everything, anyway
Thanks

September 14, 2008 at 9:53 pm[Carlo Ferraro] ” downloaded the siliconimage3132r5 driver, installed it and the problem persists.”
YUP thats the PROBLEM driver.
[Carlo Ferraro] “I gess this means reinstalling the OS. “
I wish that would fix it but it will NOT.
Do a test and use a drive that does NOT connect via your esata card, Im betting you will find it works fine.
Its the JANKY driver for the card.

September 14, 2008 at 10:14 pmZane:
How do I do this?
I can take the card out of the slot (I already did it) but when trying to open FCP it does the same rutine, tries to open and then fades.
How can I tell FCP to search for other drives, the main one in the laptop or a firewire or a USB, I have plenty of them connected.
Thanks

September 15, 2008 at 1:09 amHi Zane,
And where the “siliconimage3132r5 driver” comes from?
I don’t even see it in the Siliconimage web site.
I’m working with the “SSiI3132_1.1.9u.”
Is the one that comes with the LaCie card and one of the three available in the Siliconimage web site.
The 3132r5 as I said do not appear.
Carlo,
The first recommendation when working with FC, is no to use USB drives.
And what you should do is to unplug all your external HDs and try to make work FC only with your system drive. Trash your preffs and try to boot.
If you reinstall MacOX on top of the old system this shouldn’t affect your Windows partition.

September 15, 2008 at 2:08 amSilicon Image is the manufacturer of the chip that is used in the card they say that there card id compatible with leopard however the date on the base driver is OLDER then leopard is so something is not quire right. Yes the date on the raid driver is close to the release of leopard, but keep in mind that is a additional driver for raid support not the driver to just use the card.
https://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=32&cid=3&ctid=2&osid=3
Every esata card that works with mac that I have seen has the same chip in it even though the label on the card may be from what ever company, inside the card they all have the same chip.
I have downloaded drivers from every esata card that states it is compatible with the macbook pro. When looking at the package contents of every one of them thy all contain the same SSiI3132 inside.
Im attempting to contact Silicon Image the maker of the chip and driver, however they are making it difficult because they list no email for support.
