  • Insert Editing to DSR-1500A, via FireWire(i.Link) & USB-Serial dongle?

I’m in need of a DVCAM deck with insert editing capability.
Currently I’m editing on FCP with G5 and DSR-25.

My funds limits me from buying the SDI option board and a Decklink card.
So instead I’m wondering if it’s possible to do insert editing to the VTR
Sending Video and Audio via FireWire and controlling the VTR via a USB-RS422C Serial
converter like those by Keyspan https://www.keyspan.com/products/homepage.2.productList.Serial.spml

Has anyone any experiences with this setup?

I know for sure Editing VTR like DSR-1500A & DSR-85A can do this
    via remote editing controller .
And a Media100 Workstation I’ve used had a keyspan adapter to control a DigiBeta VTR
So I don’t see why it shouldn’t work with FCP.

    Thanks!

It works, just make sure you calibrate Playback Offset in FCP Device Control. I didn’t check with current version but after FCP 3 – FCP 4 (if I remember correctly) update I had to put some ridiculous number like -13 frames in there. In earlier versions it was -2.

    Thanks for the info, mishka!
Wonder why the Playback offset values should change from version to version.
    I’m using FCS5.1.1 on a G5.

I’m ordering the 1500A next week.
I’ll post my finding when it arrives.

They usually do not change. They are more dependent on hardware configuration, than software version.
