    Hi again…

I know this was asked by Zeeton a month ago, but I’m wondering if there’s been any progress on insert editing issues on FCP 5.0.2

    Here’s the skinny…

    1) I assembled the entire programme to tape (to a DVWA500p) – then noticed a flash frame in the mask thing I’ve had to use as a crop (see earlier post from today) so fixed it and tried to insert it.
    2) Marked an in/out from cut to covering the piece (so the insert was around 5 secs long) then first off, I got the “Cannot edit to tape as edit may only be one frame…” (ish) error.
    3) Changed to editing from mastering, made sure my inpoint wasn’t on a transition, nor the out-point, made sure video/audio and TC were all selected (just in case) and tried it again – not joy. This time it tried, but just gave me black picture, no audio and no time-code.
    4) Made the insert point a little earlier, and the out-point the end of the programme – same thing happened again.
    5) Tried (as a test) to insert the entire programme – same thing.
    6) Gave up, re-assembled the entire programme, and came a ‘baw-hair’ within missing a deadline due to the inability to insert (coupled with the stupidity of missing the flash frame in the first place of course).

Oh, and the setting was on in/out rather than entire sequence.

Anyone know why this happens? At first I thought it was some kind of deck protocol thing/setting – but a) It assembled well enough, and b) it works fine and dandy on the two avids in the building. And, it happens on the other decks in the building too.

Hope someone can enlighten me here – this is going to be really unfortunate if I can’t do insert edits. Although, if I always have to assemble, I’ll never have to black up a tape again…

I’ve seen this happen several times in FCP. It’s a bug. Try copying your material into a new sequence, sometimes that helps. I’ve had situations where I’ve been happily making inserts into my master, then all of a sudden, the bug crops up. Usually, setting a much longer in and out duration will allow me to make the edit. (Then I just punch out on the fly using the deck controls)

    Cheers

Thanks for that. At least I know there might be a work-around if it happens again, frustrating as hell though! Do we know if this is being addressed for an update by Apple?

I’ve found that it was because there was an audio dissolve in the punch in section. I disabled the audio tracks in the timeline or reapplied a new audio dissolve and then went back to inserting to tape… It didn’t matter even if the punch was video only..it still did it.
