  • insert editing – can’t do it!!! Why???

I’m running FCP Pro 5 to a Sony BetaSP PVW2800 deck. I have no problems assemble editing in Mastering mode. However, when I try to insert edit (tried V, VA1A2, A1A2) I get nothing but grief.

Occasionally, it tries to run the edit, but stops a few frames after hitting the in point. But mostly, I get “The deck may be unable to perform this edit operation since the edit is only 1 frame in duration”. Which is a bunch of crap. I tried in and out points in the viewer, plus an in point on the tape; I’ve tried the reverse; I’ve tried in and out on both sides. It still thinks it’s a 1 frame edit.

I’m ready to pitch this amateuristic piece of junk against the wall and go back to a professional edit system! Please help!

    Thanks,
    Paul

What a great way to get professionals who make their living with this “junk” to give you free advice and help in using it.

At any ratae all you need to do is connect FCP via…

Whoops, there goes the phone, good luck!

Good point. Apologies to those I’ve offended. I’m just frustrated at the countless issues and ‘bugs’ I’m getting from this system, things I’ve never had issues with using Media100 or Avid.

I switched from Media 100 4 years ago and it took the better part of 3 months working with FCP to get comfortable with it and 6 months to really get all the “bugs” worked out of my head from 6 years of editing the “Media 100” way.

The PVW-2800 is perfectly capable of performing Insert Edits. Check your settings, especially the machine control. Sounds like you have an incorrect setting somewhere.

The Deck controls are identical to what they’re always set to. I tried performing an insert edit on our Media 100 just now, and it works fine.

As far as the FCP machine controls, I’m not sure if there’s another setting other than selecting the proper deck control cable. And like I said, I can assemble edit no problem. Not sure where else to look for additional controls…

I’ve had this bug crop up once in a while. It’s not related to your settings. The workaround is to copy all of your clips into a new sequence, or try using a later out point. Either one has worked for me, but I usually find that using alater outpoint is easier.

Tried that too. For some reason, it’s stuck on thinking the edit is one frame long, regardless of in or out time/length.

    Thanks

Hmmm. I’v always managed to get that to work for me. Have you tried copying everything to a new sequence?

    HI,

I don’t pretend to offer you a solution here but we have also had this in the past and have submitted this to Apple.

Would it be possible for you to do a screen shot of your sequence at the in point and post the result here?

Have you tried to insert the entire media and not using in-out points? I recall getting the same warning about 1 frame a while ago. I edit to an 1800. Can’t recall what the circumstances were at the moment. Is this the first attempt to layoff to tape through FCP? Did it work at any other time?

it’s the first attempt at insert editing.

I’ve assemble-edited several times (I’ve only had the system for 6 weeks), and never had any problems of this kind.

Since I need to perform an insert, I can’t really select entire media, as that would defeat the purpose. I need to know that the system can perform this type of edit.

    Thanks,
    Paul
