    Thank you for your reply.
The blade-all solution seems to be the best, and what another replier suggested. I’m not into futzing with the connection points every time I want to do this kind of an edit.
PS I’m putting a random pic in here to see if it can really be that easy.

    Cheers!

Wowwwww that’s so cool! I followed the CC instructions which were very convoluted.
So for videos do people make gifs and do it the same way? I’ve seen a few, that seems handy.

Sorry, if a clip started before the insertion point in FCP7, it didn’t Ripple down.

[Bret Williams] “Sorry, if a clip started before the insertion point in FCP7, it didn’t Ripple down.”

    Maybe we’re using different terminology?
I just opened FCP studio and did it. No matter how many tracks I have, when I do an insert edit, ALL clips move to the right, leaving the clip I inserted alone, with no overlap, no loss of sync anywhere…i.e. what I was asking for in my original question.

So what happened to the clip that spanned the insert point? did it move, stay, or split?

All clips split and stayed in sync. All i did was set an in, and out, and then did an insert. It is the default setting like I said.

if i can add a video i’d be glad to show you a screen movie. works like a charm

Well that’s crazy cool. In 11 years of FCP legacy that never worked that way for me. But maybe I’m getting senile, but that was always one of my bigger complaints. What are your track patches looking like?

Yeah, I’ve always clicked the picture button, which uploads a clip, then you have to cut and paste the code to insert. When did it get so easy?

Another thing along these lines that bugs me to no end is in studio you could set an in, an out, and hit delete and it would create a gap that cut though ALL tracks. Or shift delete and it would delete everything and close the gap. Have fun with that in X. Blade was something that i thought would become obsolete because it’s so clunky, now in 2018 it’s being touted as the thing to use for what used to be a simple edit. Go figure.
But we are totally in Legacy vs. X Debates forum territory here!
In this case Legacy definitely wins. Changing all your connection points to make an edit???

Well, in X instead of pressing in, hit blade all. Then instead of out, hit blade all. Now all you have to do is select the clip on the primary and you have the same two options as legacy. Except they’re reversed. since Ripple is the default, use shift delete to not Ripple. If you have the extended keyboard use the additional delete key to leave a gap. The above method doesn’t require selecting all the tracks inpatching either. I’m thinking you operated legacy with all tracks selected?

    >Well, in X instead of pressing in, hit blade all.

Yes, and to avoid the annoying reach of Shift Command B I could remap those to something easier. But man, in and out points, when you’re editing fast those get hit without thinking. Bummer to have a whole other thing you gotta hit.

    >Now all you have to do is select the clip on the primary and you have the same two options as legacy.

True enough, but you’ve already had to use alternate keys, and select something with a mouse. But yes, that sounds like the best solution.

Don’t get me wrong, I never looked back, but there are some things in X I really don’t get why they made more difficult. Like editing.
