Just curious folks. Lately, every time I try to insert edit or assemble edit to my BVW-D75 betacam SP deck from FCP 5, my cut won’t lay to tape at the in point. My deck keeps creating new time code at the insert point and I am not sure if this is somehow caused by my DL Extreme card and FCP 5. Where is the timecode coming from?

I had no problems with driver 4.8 and I have tried various combinations of deck settings and Decklink preference settings.

    Please advise.

    Here’s my config:

    G5 Dual 2/4 GB RAM/ 250 x2 Internal SATAs/ 3.5 TB Xserve RAID/ ATI Radeon 9600 XT/ ATI Radeon 9200/ Decklink Extreme (Driver 5.0b1/Tiger (MacOS 10.4.1)/
Apple 23″ HD Cinema Display/ Apple 17″ Cinema Display/ Sony 50″ Wega DLP

DL Extreme Prefs: Black OUt on SDI Digital Out

DL connected to BetacamSP deck via SDI and RS 422 deck control

    Tapes prestriped

Deck set to preset instead of regen.

Set your deck to internal and regen timecode and it should work.

Dalen thanks for the reply. Here’s my process. Please confirm if I am doing this correctly:

    – set deck timecode and manually stipe tape in PRESET mode and timecode generated internally
    – after striping is complete, set deck to REGEN MODE
    – perform insert edit from FCP at specified in point

    Questions:

    – Does the decklink card pass timecode to the dieck via the RS422 connector?
    – Is it possible for me to bypasst prestriping a tape and just record my sequence timecode from FCP to deck and how(considering FCP seems to always want an in point set)?
    – Does LTC and VITC timecode have anyything to do with the problems I am having – the DL device control setting for 8 and 10-bit uncompressed defaults to LTC.

Thanks for any help. I need to find a small video engineering seminar!

Your workflow sounds correct… so not sure what to suggest. Is the deck working properly when it isn’t hooked to the DL card?

It seems to have worked after switching back to REGEN mode before editing to tape. Although I wish I could just edit to tape with timecode from my sequence without striping the tape first.

It is always good to stripe your tape first, but like here there is never enough deck time to stripe tapes. We do a modified stripe process where we strip say the first 2 min of the tape starting with time code 00:58:30:00. Then we put the deck in regen, and assemble edit the show onto the tape. Works everytime.
