  • Insert a single shot on a master

Can anybody here insert a single shot on to a mastered program without FCP laying black after the shot?

We just had to fix a single shot on a DVCPro HD Master and FCP laid off 15 frames of black after the shot. Tried three other times and got the same thing. Ended up having to re-lay the last 18 minutes of the show from the point of that shot.

I’ve actually posted about this in the past and no matter the format, DV, DVCAM, DVCPro HD, BetaSP, we simply cannot get FCP to insert video with an In and Out Point without laying off extraneous black after the Out Point.

Just curious if anyone else out there can actually get this to work right and if so, what format and tape machine were you using? thanks!

Which deck, Walter? Are you sure that the deck is capable of inserts?

I’ve done many an insert to DigiBeta no superfluous frames.

    FCP 6.0.4
    DVW-A500
    OSX 10.4.11
    Xeon Octo-Core 8GB RAM
    BM Decklink HD Extreme

I make sure I am in ETT Edit mode. My guess is that it’s a Kona issue. Decklink had an issue where it would duplicate the first frame of an insert that was fixed with a firmware update.

[Arnie Schlissel] “Which deck, Walter? Are you sure that the deck is capable of inserts?”

In this case it was the Panasonic AJ-HD1400 and yes, it has all the editing capabilities including Insert. In the past we’ve tried it on several BetaSP recorders as well. We own the UVW-1800 which is not that great at Inserts and I wouldn’t trust it anyway.

But certainly the 1400 is capable of this.

We also do this regularly with DigiBeta and an AJA io.

I have laid off to digibeta myself…little inserts here and there, with no black frames. AJA Kona 2 at the time I did this (worked for a week at a company color correcting). And I have output to BetaSP recently and replaced one shot with no black frames. But I have not laid back to DVCPRO HD yet, nor had the need to replace one shot on HDCAM, so I am not sure about those formats.

I’ve been able to do an insert edit with a 2.5 G5 with FCP 5.x, using DVCAM, and a Sony DSR-1800A without any extra frames. Unfortunately, this was almost two years ago, and I haven’t had to do it since, so my exact procedure escapes me now. Sorry, I couldn’t be more help!

Forgot to add, we were using an AJA Io with RS422, not a capture card

We often insert edit video from FCP to DSR-80, DSR-1500 or UVW1800 decks via an AJA IoLA box. The only time I’ve experienced extra black frames is due to operator error – In the Edit to Tape window, under the Mastering Settings tab, there’s a Trailer “Black” Box. If the box is checked and there’s a duration entered, then indeed black will be added after your out point on your master tape.

But I think you can only enter whole number seconds there, not frames, and since you are getting 15 frames of black, that’s probably not the problem for you. But worth a quick look anyway.
