Thinking of purchasing Pixelan SpiceMASTER.
Or is Ultimate S a better bang for the buck?

They are two different tools. Spicemaster basically gives you an open ended range of transitions based on greyscale gradients, with control to soften and add edges, textures, colours etc.
UltimateS contains lots of script routines to drastically shorten the time needed to perform some functions, plus some lower thirds and other backgrounds, apply film effects, etc.
Excalibur is a similar tool, combining a huge range of functions.
Have a look at the list of what they contain, and decide which you want most.

Definitely – I think the transitions that Spicemaster can create are very “organic” and can be anything from very subtle to “eyecatching” depending on what you’re after.

I have both Spicemaster and Ultimate S. As Peter said, they are two totally different products. Spicemaster is awesome for transistions and special effects. In my opinion, Ultimate S is a tool to shorten your editing time. Both are of great value to me.
