Trying to capture Betacam through a Kona Lhe and the levels are coming in 6dB lower than expected–zero dB on the Beta meters comes in as -18 in Final Cut instead of -12. I went to System Preferences to set the audio input level for the Kona device to 67% as per instructions from AJA, but when I go back to Final Cut, it gets set back down to 51%. It seems that something in FCP is setting that input level to 51% as a default. Any clues as to what, why and how to change it?

    Final Cut Studio, FCP 5.0.4, After Effects 6.5 Pro, Quicktime 7.0.4, G5 Quad 2.5, Kona-LHe V1.2, 4.5 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7800-GT, G-RAID 1TB FW800.

While there isn’t really a standard imho, -12 is at the very top end of what people consider zero analog. It ranges from -12 to -20. I usually use -16 or -18. Sony tends to think it’s -20. -18 would be alright. Just don’t let your peaks get to high or they may get distorted at the dub house. -12 is certainly the safest, but your dubs might come out awfully quiet.

I appreciate your thoughts. I haven’t had the system long enough to have made a digital tape master yet–so I haven’t even pondered where the tone should be set. Everything has gone directly to DVD or other compressed file formats. I felt that my DVDs were running a little too low in audio level and I needed to capture audio as high as I reasonably could. My Kona card seems to think the ideal digital level corresponding to 0 analog is -18 dB FSD. I’ll go with that and be happy.
