This is really 2 questions in one…

First, we have a bunch of footage shot on an HVX that we know audio channels 3&4 are bad on. Is there a way to ingest the files into Final Cut via log and transfer and only bring channles 1&2 into the quicktime files it creates? I was thinking I could create offline files and adjust the audio channels before capture like I would do with tape, but I can’t figure out how to create offline files with P2 footage.

Second, my post production coordinator went to an Apple demo last night, and came back saying that Apple claims bringing DVCPRO HD footage in as Pro Res would actually be a faster/smaller codec to work in. As far as I know this isn’t the case, isn’t DVCPRO HD 100Mbits/S and ProRes around 200Mbits/S? Was Apple saying Final Cut will work with ProRes footage faster than DVCPRO HD footage? If so and I wanted to bring in stuff off of a P2 card as ProRes would I just set my easy setup to ProRes and log and transfer the files or is there another hoop to jump through?

    Thanks.

You have to reimport them. WHen you get the MXFs loaded up into log and transfer click the import settings tab on the right side under the preview window. You will see you can select what to import there.

If you have all of the clips selected on the left side, you can then ‘Apply to Selection’.

No it wouldn’t, and I bet Apple didn’t say that. You cannot do this with DVCPro HD footage, but if you have AVCIntra footage you can change that to ProRes on import. If you want to change your DVCPro HD footage to ProRes, you will have to run all your footage through compressor.

Yeah…AVCIntra is also recorded onto P2 cards on certain cameras…HXP3000 for example. I’ll wager your boss heard “P2” and assumed that meant DVCPRO HD.
