Inevitable gamma shift in AE CS4 with PNG sequence?
I can’t even remember how many combinations I’ve tried to get AE CS4 (Mac) to render a frame without changing the gamma or color balance of a PNG input sequence. I’ve tried with color management turned off, legacy gamma checked and unchecked, color managed with 709 workspace and sRGB Interpret footage for the PNGs, etc. In all instances, the displayed preview for the comp and the rendered output are much darker than the original PNGs.
It’s almost as if AE can’t help but mess with the original plate. Why can’t it leave it alone!
As some of you may have noticed, Hollywood Camera Work released some test green screen footage for testing and practice. You can find the plates here: https://www.hollywoodcamerawork.us/greenscreenplates.html. I’m using one of the HD plates which is a PNG sequence and I can’t get AE to render it back seamlessly.
Am I missing something obvious (or not so obvious)? What should be the correct workflow to perform some compositing on a sequence like this? If this was real project footage and I needed to merge clean plates with some composited sequences they would never match!
I’ve read the threads about similar gamma shifts when using ProRes and some old KONA codecs. I’ve also read the Adobe documentation of color management for CS4, but I can’t figure it out. Any help would be really appreciated.
