Indoor Location Mic
I’ve been shooting stock video with out sound for a few years. I’m going to try to hustle some assignment work and I’m building a sound kit. I’ve settled on a Rode NTG-3 shotgun for outdoor location (thanks to this forum) and I am undecided on an indoor location mic. The Schoeps 641 would be my choice but… 2k is more than I want to spend. Are there some suggestions in the sub $500 range? I’ve seen posts by Ty Ford recommending the AT 4053A or the Audix SCX-1HC. Any others to consider or which of these 2 would be best all around. Mic’s will be on a boom to a digital recorder.

I bought the AT4053 because I couldn’t afford the Schoeps. For indoor booming work, I love it. It sounds very natural. I will likely buy another 4053 in the future to have a back-up, and I may buy a pair of cardioid capsules to use them for stereo recording + music production.
Also, if it’s not too late, you may want to consider the 4073 shotgun from Audio Technica. It’s a great sounding mic that will match the 4053 a little better. If you already bought the Rode, it’s no biggie. That’s a nice mic too.

Sam thanks for the input. The 4073 was on my list and I read so many praises of the Rode NTG-3 that I am leaning in that direction. I’ll take another look. Thanks for the endorsement for the 4053.

I’ve picked up a couple of used AKG SE300B bodies & then bought the CK93 Hypercardioid & CK91 Cardioid capsules so that I could have the option of subtle differences depending on the need. The CK93/SE300B combo is often mentioned as a very good, low-cost, option to the Schoeps 641 or the Sanken CS1… I’m pleased with the sound, and the accuracy of this combo.
Even brand new, the cost is half of either Shoeps or Sanken:
