Increase in brightnes shows retouching. Any way around this?
Hello All,
Lurking for a long time, but need some help I cant find the answer for.
Heres the situation: I’ve been retouching some still images that will end up as a slide show on a DVD. They look great in my color controlled workflow, its when they get out of it I get worried.
When shown on a monitor (i.e.tv) that is brighter (about 30%) than my monitor you can see the retouching. Is there any way around this? I’ve tried saving as a jpeg, but that didnt solve it. I’ve also made screen captures and that doesnt seem to work either. A possible solution could be to print them and scan them in, but there are over 200 so its too time consuming.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A possible solution would be to save two folders. One folder for your color workflow and one folder for the adjusted images for output (tv). As a general rule, you should always adjust your images according to your final output, but I understand when ‘final’ output could be both a print and a web/dvd file it can get tricky. Another option maybe to adjust your images using curves (in photoshop) it’s a great way to control the brightness but still darken the midtones (which is where the retouching, usually takes place) so when the files are viewed on the tv, the midtones should be a bit darker and mask any ‘obvious’ retouching issues.

What kind of retouching are you doing?
How is it visible once it “is out there”?

For future retouching work you might consider using a Levels adjustment layer with a high gamma value at the top of your layers. You can switch this on to check how the colors in your retouching are matching up with the colors in the original image (without having to go all the way to the TV).
This works because it exaggerates the differences between similar colors, pushing them farther apart. So two colors that look the same on your display may obviously not be the same when you check it with your Levels adjustment layer.
This doesn’t actually help you fix poor retouching, but it will help you spot it before you think you’re done!
