incorporating HD footage in an SD project

Make sure you have the correct project settings for SD and HD should just sit right on the timeline and be fine when editing. If you find you are loosing part of the screen, goto pan/crop tool and select “match output aspect.”

IMO, the biggest advantage of using HD footage in an SD project is the ability to zoom in on something.
For example, I shot a press conference in HD last week and left the camera on a wide shot.
Since this was meant for an SD DVD, I had the ability to zoom in to compensate for the differences in people’s heights (quite a bit in some cases) as well as crop out any unwanted material on the sides.
I plan to do the same thing when I’m shooting a series of interviews soon as they’re all destined for SD.
Lock the camera off on a waist shot and then, in the edit suite, adjust the shot as desired.
This will make my life much easier than zooming in when the interviewee is saying something serious and I need a tighter shot of him/her.
It also allows me to instantly cut from a waist shot to a tight shot or vice versa and not have to worry about anything.

I do that as well, as I use 1080i I keep my zooming in P/C limited to 1280w or 720h so I can still render to 720p and have an HD format as well as SD….works out nice!

The press conference was my very first HD shoot with out new camera (JVC HM700) and the ability to do that definitely made my day.
When I think about it, I’ve been doing it for years with the “pan and scan” feature on oversize stills.
Doing it with video though is a whole ‘nother thrill 🙂
