  • Importing Sony EX3 24fps footage in FCP7…

Posted by Dennis Przywara on April 8, 2013 at 4:30 pm

    Hi,

I’m new to the conversion game so bear with me. i shot footage on my Sony EX3 at 23.98FPS. I bring it into the log and transfer in my FCP7, it converts it fine, but as 29.97. Is there a setting in FCP that I’m not properly using that is making this 29.97? Do I have to down convert this? Looking for some help.

    thanks!

Are you SURE you shot 23.98? FCP brings in the footage as it was shot, it doesn’t convert frame rates. Some cameras have 24p settings that are the 24p look but that run at 29.97, with pulldown. You have to make sure that you aren’t choosing that option, but are choosing a 23.98 setting.

    Hi,

When i watch it through my XDCAm Clip browser, it says it was captured at 23.98, Rec, at 59.94, and format at 59.94i. So it should be 24fps, right? i made a screenshot of the XDcam file below.

It captured at 23.98…but RECORDED it onto the card at 59.94i. That means that the 24 frames were captured at 29.97 interlaced with 3/2 pulldown.

Ahh… I get it, then what would be the best way to convert this to 1920X1080, 23.98, apple prores? i tried mpegstream clip and it wouldn’t take the bpav file.

Log and transfer it as ProRes 422…if you can. Most times you can’t, it has to come in as XDCAM. Then use Compressor to convert to ProRes 422. THEN you can look at using Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown. But there are 4 patterns to choose from, I’m not sure which will work best. You have to test.
