  • importing songs from i tunes ?

Posted by Tom Maloney on May 24, 2007 at 10:24 am

In DVD studio I am able to import songs to the timeline for a slide show. In FCP a mp4 will not play even if I try to render it on the timeline. If I use i tunes to try and convert it to an Aiff , it tells me it is protected ? Is there a solution to this ?

    thanks

Is this a commercial song you purchased from the iTunes site or your own music or a music library cut?

re-burn the song to a cd, and then re-import it into itunes.

    thanks

that’s why you can’t use it in FCP. It’s part of the digital protection because you can’t simply bring copyrighted music into Final Cut Pro and edit with that song.

We actually have a great discussion on this in my upcoming All Things Apple podcast with two folks in the audio production industry. What you would need is a sync license to legally cut with this song.

so unless you plan to make money on this, or distribute it out of your home, jsut burn a cd of it, and re-import it as an aiff.

Making money on it has nothing to do with it being legal to use it.

i dunno. It’s a debate, i wouldnt worry about it. thats the world we live in. go to youtube, i’m not saying it’s right, but its the way things are going, copyright laws are going to have to be released a bit and made easier. especially for nonprofit type things.

yes, get a release if you can. but if your making a dvd of home video, and u want to add a song, i wouldn’t worry about it.

I’m constantly amazed that people feel they can just steal someone’s stuff and “not worry about it”. I was a working musician for several years and wrote several pieces of music for use in motion pictures and corproate stuff. You can’t just use someone’s material without permission. Prior to 1976 there was a “Not for Profit” clause that allowed not for profit entities to use copyrighted materials without cost. However with the Copyright Act of 1976 that provision was struck down and has not existed for over 30 years now. But people still want to use this to justify what they are doing – often citing this non-existant provision as if they were a Bostonian lawyer.

Get permission and enjoy the freedom that comes from knowing that you have done the right thing.

right, so joe schmo who’s using celine dion music to make a dvd for his mother showing photos of his childhood is going to get the rights to celine dion’s music??

thats not the real world dude. go to youtube. if your talking about a professional film or video, i totally agree with you. but the people at home, using fcp express, imovie, or anything like that, it’s just not the case.

i have lots of friends who are musicians professionally, who would be extremely flattered to know that one of there fans is cutting there home video with there music. guess it depends what side of the fence you are on.

wht your saying is that, if your going to have a party, make sure you buy the rights to the music before you invite everyone over…
