  • Importing project or sequences but not duplicate media

Posted by Steve Brame on April 25, 2013 at 2:53 pm

Just wondering…if I import a project into another, and some of the imported project’s media already exists in the main project, this creates duplicates of the media. Triplicates if I import another, and so on.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think it would be a good idea for PPro to be able to recognize existing media in a project and not bring in a duplicate, or is there already a method to handle this?

    Steve…

CS Next handles this….Apparently….it will allow you to pull in sequences and projects via the Media Browser and it will recognize and link to assets you already have in the project.

    BUT…

Not much you can do about it today.

If you choose to import a project and select just a sequence(s) it will recognize any media assets you already have in your project and will link your imported sequence to existing media assets (and import any assets in the sequence not already in your project).

But like Alex said, if you import the entire project it will duplicate media. You have to import sequences only to prevent that – at least until CSNext or whatever it’s called comes out. It’s supposed to be addressed in it.

Really? In the current release? Are you sure? I had no idea that was the case.

Works in CS5.5 (I’m not on 6 yet). Blew my mind when I discovered it.

    Woohoo!! It’s not just me!

I couldn’t make it to NAB this year. Have they announced a release date for Next for Cloud users?

I believe, my friends, I have found an answer.

The situation: I have two identical drives. I want to bring a sequence from one project into the other project. Each time, using “import” I would get the sequence, and a bin full of dupe media.

Solution: move the entire project from one drive to the other. Rename it. Make sure the original drive is disconnected. Open that project. It will not find media automatically. Relink, easy peasy. Save as a different name. Open the other project, do import, sequence, ipso facto, no dupe media.

Basically you have to relink the media first to the old project, then import the sequence into the new project.

    Janky? Yes. Works? Yes.
