  • Importing Photoshop files into an HDTV composition

I was given a Photoshop file for a title that I need to animate in an HD composition, but it doesn’t appear correctly in After Effects. The PSD file was 1815×186 at a resolution of 100dpi. Using AE’s HDTV preset, I generated a composition that was 1920×1080, 29.97fps. After I imported the PSD and dropped it into the composition, however, it was too big. I can only see roughly the center third.

Thinking this was a dpi issue, I adjusted the PSD to 72dpi and reimported, but it only got fractionally smaller. Then I simply dragged the PSD file onto the ‘Create Composition’ icon so it would use the file’s settings and I still only see the center third. Lastly, I made my own PSD file, set it to an HDTV preset of 1920×1080 in Photoshop, threw up some nonsense text and imported that to AE. In every composition, however, it’s still too big.

Am I missing something super simple? I mean, if the resolution in Photoshop is smaller than the resolution in AE, why are these files showing up so darn big? Any help is greatly appreciated! Currently using Adobe CS3 on a WinXP system.

Any way to delete this post? Turns out the problem was with the Magnification ratio popup, which officially makes me an idiot. Thank God I live with a UI designer…
