Hi, I am using importing Panasonic P2 files from an external hard drive. I’m running Final Cut Pro 5.1.4.

In the import Panasonic P2 window, I can name the reels and names of each clip I’m importing. My question is, once I do that, will the renamed reels and clip names show up if I plug this external HD to another Mac? Is there any issue with other variables for example, a different version of FCP on another Mac that I’ll plug in this external HD to?

Because I am importing some files for myself as well as importing them for another edit elsewhere. I don’t want to do double logging and renaming work if the files won’t show up on another Mac once they leave this computer.

Sorry if this has been asked before. Thanks in advance

When you change the names of the clips, the QT files have those names. Plus if you give someone the project file, they’ll have those names as well. And the reel information…all that is now attached to the imported QT.

Shane – thanks for your reply.

If I’m not passing over the project file, and just the external HD, do the renamed clip names, reels etc follow?

So if I want to keep the file name changes and reel info changes, I should also export/open a copy of the project on whatever computer I’m editing?

Sorry for the stupid questions. I guess I can make some simple deductions…

    Thanks anyway

    YEs, they do.

Well, I tend to organize things in the project, so that is why I keep it. But if all they want is the media, organize it on the finder and get it to the client. That should work fine.

    Thanks for the info Shane!

Ok just to make sure again – I’m passing back the external HD but the renamed clips have been imported to my own scratch disk and NOT the external HD. Do the changes in reel names still take effect on the ext HD if I connect and import files from it on another computer?

Sorry if this is confusing, and thanks for your help and patience.

Oh, you are passing on the drive with the original P2 card dumps? The original MXF files? Those names will not change…only the imported footage will change. I thought you were importing the footage, then copying the imported clips to give to someone. Only those imports will have the information you change…not the originals.

Yes I was meaning to pass on the drive with the original P2 dumps.

    Thanks Shane!
