  • Importing NTSC tape on PAL camcorder

Posted by Suzy Add on October 3, 2008 at 8:28 am

I rented a camera and accidentaly filmed on NTSC instead of PAL. I’m using a PAL mini-DV camcorder to import the footage but Final Cut Pro cannot find any video. The tape plays fine in the camcorder and I can control it through Final Cut Pro but while I can hear the audio, the image is just colour bars.

I tried going ro Easy Set Up and changing the settings from PAL to NTSC but nothing seems to work.

Do I need to rent an NTCS camera to import it or is there any way to change the settings on Final Cut Pro? Its a very basic camera I’m trying to use but if the tape plays perfectly then I don’t understand why it won’t import?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

The more information you give us, the easier it is for us to help.

That camera is switchable between NTSC and PAL as you have already found out. You need to ensure that camera is in NTSC mode and you are capturing to an NTSC project. If the camera is set for PAL or you’re trying to capture to a PAL project, you will not be able to capture anything.

The camera im using to import is only PAL. It doesn’t have an NTSC option but the NTSC tape plays fine in it. I’ve tried importing with the project as both PAL and NTSC but neither work. I think I’ll just have to rent an NTSC camera to import. Thanks for your help! 🙂

    Hey Suzy,
    Bit late.
Pal camcorders normally can play NTSC tapes but what you get is not standard PAL. You won’t be able to capture it with FC.
