i was just wondering… i have 3 main “problems” with avid xpress at my “work” (a.k.a the army).

    1) Lately, i can’t import some MPEG’s into the avid system, some of them ARE files that i used to import before without any problems. it says (something like) “the frame dimenisons of the file are NTSC and the frame dimensions of the project are PAL”.

Now,some of the files suppose to be PAL, since i exported them before as PAL’s (with the Conopus procoder). it’s weird.
So now in order to import the Mpeg’s into the avid system i have to export the files as a vidoediting file (quicktime). i hate this, since it takes me a lot of time to move the files over and over between the computers.

how do i solve it? i tried to change my import setting, but it did’nt change a thing.

    2) Can i import mp3 file without converting it to a WAVE file? or, can i convert the file to Wave using the Avid Xpress ?(it’s a problem, since i can’t even import it)
sure, it’s not a problem to convert it using other applications, but i can’t install any of those programs (quick time pro? audiograbber?) to my computer there. Once again, i have to convert it using the other computer (the one with the conopus procoder), and i hate this…

3)about the motion effect. i’m trying to make a motion effect on a scene, but i want the speed of the scene to change During it. for exapmle, i want the scene to start at a speed of 10%, and to end at a speed of 70% WITHOUT jumping from 10% to 70%.
I mean, i want the speed of it to change from 10% to something like 20% (just random numbers) , from 20% to 30% and so on ( in the very last frame the speed should be 70%)…
i want it to be like a PIP effect(for example, when the scaling on the first keyframe is 100 and the scaling of the last keyframe in 200, it does’nt jump from 100 to 200 at once).

i mean, i can just make 7 different motion effects with different speed to each of them (10%-20%-30%-40%-50%-60%-70%, for example), but i’ll still have those “jump-cuts” between the cuts.

can any of you help me with these problems? i’m sure at least one of them can be solved…
    any ideas?

    I’ll try to address a couple things…
Question 1 is the toughest, since I understand from your post that the exact same file would import for you in the past. What could have changed since then to cause your Xpress to refuse a file that it accepted before? Only things that come to mind are corrupted MCState settings files or User settings files. Try trashing your MCState files (there are two. One in your User and one in the Settings folder).
Question 2 is a little easier. I did a test with a couple random mp3 files. One imported flawlessly while the second gave me > QuickTime Error! This file cannot be imported <. The only difference was that the "good" file had constant bitrate LAME encoding while the "bad" one had variable bitrate LAME encoding. Maybe you could get the mp3 re-encoded and sent to you? And finally Question 3. Avid has reserved keyframable speed ramping effects for those willing to pay for the Adrenaline or higher, so Xpress users don't get Timewarp. Possible workarounds...do the speed effect the way you described, but cut your video into more, smaller chunks so that the change is less noticeable; export to After Effects and do the effect there; buy SpeedRamP, an AVX plugin from 3Prong at: https://www.3prong.com/; or search for some other program or plugin that’ll do it for you.,

    Good Luck!

    Lior –

You shouldn’t get jump cuts if you match frame your footage. It’s a pain (I found this out the hard way – I’ve got a Meridian system I can keyframe motion effects, and it was quite annoying to find out I couldn’t do it in the XPress!).

You should be able to do audio conversions with iTunes. Our network folks (I work at the USAFA) balked at letting me use the software, but once I filled out the ‘proper paperwork’, they gave us permission to use it.
