  • Importing NTSC footage from MiniDV to FCP5

    Hello,

I did a wedding video using two cameras. One was PAL and the other was NTSC.
I have no trouble importing the PAL video.

But when I try to Capture the NTSC tape, even though Capture window says VTR OK (and will control the tape deck), it only shows colour bars and will not import the footage (it says waiting for timecode and then says there is no footage).

I have changed all the settings in FCP to NTSC, trashed preferences, and tried opening it all in a new project but I cannot get it to work.

I’m sure it’s something obvious. But I have never been able to import NTSC footage. I am using a PD150 to try to import. The tape plays fine in the camera.

Hope someone can help. The groom is getting impatient…

    Thanks

Have you tried Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup > NTSC DV?

You should be able to capture using the correct easy setup as Kevin suggests. After your NTSC footage is captured you will need to convert it to PAL in order for it to work properly in the PAL timeline. Or convert the PAL to NTSC if you’re working in an NTSC timeline. You’ll need something like Nattress Standards Converter.

Will the camera or deck that you’re using play back the NTSC tape at all? Can it handle both PAL and NTSC? You might have to find a deck or camera that will play it back. Then you get to the fun part…getting the two to play well together…although as long as there isn’t any fast horizontal movement, the Nattress converter should do it for you.
