    Hello,

    New FC user here.

I am trying to import a file that I received from another editor. I believe he uses Final Cut Studio and the file is in the following Codec MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode,1280×720. I use Final Cut Express and when I import the file only the audio comes over. Is it possible to get the video imported into FCE? Or do I need some kind of installer?

Thank you in advance for any information you can give me.

    Andy

Final Cut can’t edit Mpeg formats.
Try trans-coding the Mpeg clip via Mpeg Streamclip to a QT file that you can use in Final Cut

Here is the link to download, it is free.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the info, Richard. But unfortunately this did not work.

I believe the clip is already saved as a quick time file as it is a .mov. But if I try opening the file with quicktime directly from my scratch drive the following error comes up:

“The document “Untitled-23.mov” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.

You may need to install additional software to open this type of file. “

There is a ‘tell me more button’ which links you to this page:

Do I really need to update from FCE to studio to open this file? It doesn’t seem right because I can import it into FCE and play it in the canvas. But like I said earlier it only plays the audio and not the video. I would think if the file was not compatible at all that nothing would play.

    Thank you for any insight,

    Andy

I suppose if you cant open it up in QT and you cant transcode it with Mpeg StreamClip,It sounds like you may have a corrupted file. Have them encode you a new file. I would stay away from Mpeg though… ProRes wont work either as you need Final Cut 6.0 minimum.

Try having them give you an QT H.264 or a DVCPRoHD.The FCE manual says you should be able to edit any video codec you can open in QT on YOUR MACHINE. so start with those.

    Hope this helps.

Sorry, but FCE only works with DV and/or AIC.

Well there you go, Thanks David,
So Andrew, have them give you a DV file and your off. Otherwise an upgrade to FC Studio would be your best bet.

Sorry there is not better news.

    Good Luck!
