importing media into FCP that was captured with Avid
how would I export my timeline sequence on Avid Xpress Pro as a quicktime file that I can import into Final Cut Pro? Or, better yet, is there a way to play my clip data in final cut pro? Maybe i don’t even need to export the clips as quicktime files. The media was captured from DVC Pro-50 tapes directly into Avid by somebody else for me, but he doesn’t know how I can get the media in Final Cut Pro so I can edit it there. I know as long as I can get them as quicktime files then they will play in Final Cut.

what is that? I have final cut Pro installed but only today am I going to purchase Avid Xpress Pro and install it. However, if i can get the clips to play in Final Cut then I won’t need to purchase Avid and that would be better, I can just edit the media in Final Cut instead. So far i’ve been working on my friend’s computer on Avid Xpress Pro and now i want to take the media (just the media, not the project file or sequnces) and edit it for a different project on my compter with Final Cut Pro.

The Avid codec allows you to play Avid Quicktimes in Quicktime applications (like FCP)..without it, it wont work.

Download and install the one at the top that’s called “Latest Avid Codecs for Mac and PC”
Note that Avid Quicktimes do not retain the timecode from the original source tapes, so if you are relying on logs, you will have a problem.
Note also, that Avid Quicktimes in the past did not perform well within FCP (they are more intended for non-realtime programs like After Effects)…I have not had a chance to try the new codecs yet…the old ones would cause weird problems sometimes in FCP.

thanks I appreciate that! Now after i download the latest codecs, then what do i do? Do i use the codecs to convert the media into QT files?
Do i still have to open the souce media files in Avid and export them as QT files but this time using the latest codecs? -
Once you install them on the computer you have Final Cut installed on, it will be able to play the Quicktimes exported from your Avid. Without the codecs, it wont.
You do not have to do anything to your Avid system and you do not need to re-export or convert anything.

Let me re-phrase that…if you exported from the Quicktime movies from the Avid using the Avid Quicktime codec, you do not need to re-export or convert anything.
