Importing Media from SD Card
Hi,
I’m kind of new to FCP. I have a consumer grade camcorder (Panasonic SDR-S7) which records video to an SD card. Its only computer connection is via a USB port – no firewire. I’ve dragged all the media files onto my PowerBook but FCP doesn’t recognize the file formats from the camcorder.
The media files are ‘Unix executable files’ and are in the following format:
MOV001.MOD
MOV001.MOI
MOV002.MOD
MOV002.MOI
PRG00A.PGIetc…
I need to know how to convert these or allow FCP to recognize them because Panasonic’s video editing software bundled with the camcorder (MotionSD Studio) was developed by a moron and is utterly useless.

What format does this camcorder shoot? AVCHD?
You can’t just drag the files into FCP…FCP deal with quicktime files, and these are some format that the camera shoots. You need to use the capture options FCP provides. If on tape, you use LOG AND CAPTURE, if the footage is tapeless on SD cards or P2 cards, then you use LOG AND TRANSFER.
YOu need to use Log and Transfer.
WHat version of FCP do you have? You need FCP 6 in order to import AVCHD footage.

I believe the format is SDHC. Not sure. It records it directly onto an SD card. The version of FCP that I have is 5.0.4 so I may need to upgrade.
I’ve tried using Log & Capture but it doesn’t seem to be able to recognize the media files or folders where they’re located.

What does the side of the camera say? HDV? AVCHD? just SDHC? Hmmm…google gets me SD (standard def) High Capacity. And looking that up gets me that it is MPEG-2. SO…you need something that converts MPEG-2 into a format that FCP can edit…so you need third party. No need to upgrade.
Try MPEG STREAMCLIP (free…google it) and see if you can convert the footage to DV/NTSC.
This is a guess, and I have no clue how to do it. Just giving you options to try.

It’s a bit of a pain to have to use a workaround with this camera, but at least it’s possible.

I used the Panasonic AG-AC130 AVCCAM HD Handheld Camcorder to shoot a video and when i checked the SD card all the files were .mts I had no idea what that was. After an couple hours of freaking out I came and read your comment about converting the files… so i did and it worked!! Thank you
