    Hi

I would be very happy if someone could give me some guidance with importing HD film clips from digital cameras and Premiere.

I have been thinking of buying a new digital camera, that besides taking photos can film in HD (720 or 1080). However I want to make sure that I can import these film clips into Premiere. I did a test with the “Canon Poweshot SX1 IS”. I brought my own SD card to a shop, filmed a few clips with the Canon camera and brought them home. I was able to view them but I couldn’t import them into Premiere. I renamed the extension to *.mpg but there were still some issue with the audio. I have successfully imported film clips (640×480) from a older digital camera.

I understand that there must be a difference between the HD film clips produced from a video camera and a digital still camera. But is there some codec or something that I could install to make it work in Premiere?

Any help or guidance in this jungle would be much appreciated.

    Hi Hans,

You don’t mention which version of Premiere you have, it makes a difference. CS5 is very capable with H.264 formats, with camera presets built-in. CS4 may work, but I wouldn’t count on compatibility with CS3 really.

    Hi Jeff

Thanks for your reply. I’m using CS4. I havent had the chance to try CS5 yet, but I think I will download a demo version of from Adobe and see if works.

If trying the CS5 demo, keep in mind that many presets are disabled due to MPEG licensing rules, so you may not be able to try your format anyway.
