IMPORTING & EXPORTING 16:9 QT in & out of FCP!!! Please help!
Posted by Jon Boast on May 13, 2009 at 9:01 amHello please help!
I often have problems with 16:9 in QT. I know this is a well talked of matter. I know if you change the setting in QT pro that you can change the dimension of a movie.
However, I am editing a 16:9 video (all the correct anamorphic boxes are ticked!) in FCP and a friend has created a graphic. I have the QT .mov files in 720 x 576 (PAL 16:9 right?!). When I import it into FCP the anamorphic project it displays as what looks like a 4:3 file. Please please help! Is it okay to just change the file in QT to 1024 x 576, but surely this will change the quality of the source file?
Please help

May 13, 2009 at 1:30 pmHi Jon,
Make sure that the clip shows as Anamorphic in the Browser.[Jon Boast] “Is it okay to just change the file in QT to 1024 x 576, but surely this will change the quality of the source file? “
No.
Don’t do that. FC won’t recognize anymore the files as SD PAL.
it will consider that have Square pixels.
If you intend to finish in SD PAL (DVD, Broadcas, Tape) this would force the footage to two recalculations (?): From the original PAL pixels to Square pixels and back to PAL pixels.Sure would degradethe quality.
If you go to the web, no problem.

May 13, 2009 at 2:22 pmBillliant thanks. So simple and yet it worked a treat! You dont have any tips of exporting quicktime (to go into a idvd 16:9 project). Everytime I export to quicktime even with 16:9 settings the quicktime dispalys it at 4:3? I need to export my current 16:9 video at the best quality to work as a 16:9 file in Idvd? Any tips much appreciated thanks so much.JON

May 13, 2009 at 3:50 pmHi Jon,
Is not really 4×3.
QT read all the pixels by default as Square therefor things look deformed.
I don’t have iMovie, but I guess it won’t have problem to display the movie properly.
Sure it have a 4×3/Anamorphic button.

May 13, 2009 at 4:29 pmreally? I am confused. the version of idvd I am using has templates for 16:9 dvds which would indicate that it will take 16:9 video otherwise why have this option?
Why is quicktime so confusing when it comes to 16:9? Can someone just let me know if they would be so kind, the best way to export a 16:9 quicktime file that my client can open in 16:9? pretty please!!

May 13, 2009 at 4:51 pmTo have a 16:9 anamorphic movie display properly in Quicktime:
– Open the movie in Quicktime
– go the Window menu and open Show Movie Properties (Apple & J command)
– Click on Presentation button
– Conform aperature to ‘Production’ setting————————-

like many things in the software world, if it has the feature it should work, but doesn’t always.
this holds true for iDVD so far…

August 4, 2009 at 6:40 pmChris, this is a bit off topic, but you seem to have some iDVD insight, so I’m hoping you can help!
My work is legal, so my clients can sometimes be even more obtuse (read: old school) about technology than the average bear, and crankier when there are unexpected surprises.
Typically, they are taking a DVD to an unknown DVD player & TV, dropping it in and pressing play, so I want to make it as universal as I can. I am newly shooting HD (usually 1080/30p) with the new JVC HM100, editing in FCP 6, and typically have used iDVD for its ease of use and light learning curve. There are those on my staff that don’t necessarily have the same technical knowledge I do, and the iDVD interface is very easy to master quickly and get the video out the door and into court. That said, I am not opposed to using DVDSP and training them how to use it. My main goal is to have our projects look their best on as many tv/dvd combos as possible without the end user having to make adjustments.
So, is editing and exporting Anamorphic all there is to it, or do I need to re-think my whole workflow? Many thanks to any who may be able to help.
