  • Importing DNxHD quicktime movies

I’m quite green when it comes to AVID, and I understand that all quicktime movies need to be converted to its MXF format upon import. That’s fine. However, I recently converted some files into DNxHD, thinking it was supposed to speed up the importing process. However, these DNxHD files still seem to be taking a really long time to import – so much that I get the feeling that it’s still reconverting them.

To get specific: I converted a video file into DNxHD, 1080i (1920×1080), 145mbit
The clip is 3m 12s long, and 3.13GB in size.
I made sure that my avid project settings matched this before I began importing. The movie still takes more than 10 minutes to import.

    So, my question:

If importing DNxHD files, shouldn’t the MXFs simply be “copying” rather than rendering a new file, therefore making the process quite fast? If I understand correctly, MXF is simply container, and the DNxHD data remains the same? Am I doing something wrong, or is this just “the way it is” ?

I think your import settings have to be set a certain way. I assume to 601/709 size and color, make sure your field order is correct for the project you’re in, and choose to ignore alpha. This may speed up the import.

You make no mention of what version of Media Composer you are running or any system details at all. There were some buggy versions (prior to 3.0 I believe) for which fast import of DNxHD didn’t work.

As Michael mentioned, make sure your RGB vs. 601/709 settings match. Any variation in settings will cause Avid to recreate the file as it is changing it on import.

If everything matches, it still takes a bit to import, but it is much faster and you should see the words “Fast Import” on the screen while it is importing.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

I have indeed solved the mystery and gotten the “fast import” dialog box to display. Imports are faster now and I am happy.
