  • Importing Alpha channels from AE to FCPX

    Hi,

I thought this may help some people struggling with the same problem I have been on for a few days now so just some screen shots of settings that work to import alpha channels into FCPX
the first point is the export format:
ensure the colour is set to straight. then ensure alpha channel is on in above ‘channel’ setting. (standard quicktime format)

second point is FCPX proxy files do not recognise alpha channels to you must render from optimised or original files

(if it is still not working check the alpha channel settings in in the ‘info’ page of the video file inside final cut pro.)

you can see on the left in the second picture – the the red writing is imported from after effects and has a transparent background which shows the image behind.

hope that helps someone /saves someone some time.

I’d probably use ProRes 4444 instead of Animation codec as well.

I second ProRes 4×4 (much smaller file size, better bit depths, etc)

There is also an “alpha handling” switch available in metadata in case you need to change the alpha type from straight to premultiplied (black or white).
