  • Importing AAF files into Final Cut

Posted by Zeliha Bozkurt on April 4, 2006 at 1:38 pm

    Hi

I have an AAF file (which was created by using Automatic Duck) that I am trying to import into Final Cut.

When I try to import this file Final Cut gives me a message saying that this file is not recognized.

I have Automatic Duck on my Mac.

Is it possibble to import AAF files into FCP at all. If yes why, am I getting this error message.

    Thanks

    Zee

What is AAF? (Too many abbreviations!)

    What is the sample-rate?

I use imported audio files every day.

I convert them from their native formatto 16 bit 48 kHz “AIFF” files using iTunes or Quicktime Pro.

I remembered that AAF is Apple’s iTunes “proprietary protected” format.

It designed to NOT be used in pro editing software like FCP.

Its even a violation of copyright laws to describe how to circumvent these safeguards.

    No, Matte. That’s AAC.

And for the record, there’s nothing protected about AAC files. They’re just a variation on MPEG-4 compression. It’s usually what H.264 online video files use as well. You are correct that the protected songs from the iTunes store are ALSO AAC files, but those are specifically listed as “Protected AAC” under file type.A file that is simply “AAC” is under none of those restrictions.

At any rate, I think that Zeliha is asking about transfering an Avid project into FCP. I can’t help you there, but there IS an Automatic Duck forum here on the COW. Have you tried there yet?

I told you, too many abbreviations.

    My head hurts.

Off to sleep with you, now.

Hey, I didn’t know what an AAF file was until today either! It seems like there’s a new one every day. I certainly don’t know them all either.

Automatic Duck makes all sorts of Import and Export plugins to go into FCP From Different Programs and out of FCP into different Programs,
Including AE – Pro Tools – Avid and Others
Which Import — Export plugin do you have for Auto Duck and from which Program are you coming out of.
If Im not mistaken AAF files are for Quantel Systems, Not FCP which would need OMF Files.

    Thanx

    Confusing thread, eh?

Pro Import FCP 2.0 (in beta now) adds the ability to import AAF files. The original poster contacted my via email and I was able to import his/her Quantel-exported AAF file into FCP.

AAF, or advanced authoring format, is an “evolution” of the OMF (open media framework interchange) format. Both are meant to be solutions to carry media and data between normally incompatible software.

AAF is currently the industry standard in high-end media production, the most used situation being to export-import video, audio and metadata between Media Composer (video editors and whatnot) and Pro Tools (sound editors and sound mixers) and vice-versa.

OMF does not support video (natively).

source: I work as a production mixer in TV Globo, the 3rd largest TV Network in the world, where they use this method.

I need to get a project from Edius 5 to FCP 7. I have the Pro Import FCP 2.0, but FCP gives me an error message that says that my AAF is not a AAF. Any advice?

P.s. I’ve tried using EDL but was unsuccesful

    Jan,

Can you zip the AAF file and send to us?

    ftp://ftp.automaticduck.com
    user: support
    pass: support

Please create a folder and name it with your email address, then put the zipped AAF file into that folder.

    Thank you.
