imported movies are washed out when i drop them on my sequence
Posted by Jim Eckes on September 15, 2005 at 9:10 pmi’m working in fcp 5.0
why do my black levels get pumped up on imported video clips when i drop them onto a sequence? they look fine in the source window.
i’m working with a sequence set for DVCPRO50-NTSC.John Pale replied 20 years, 8 months ago 3 Members · 5 Replies -

Post which OS, and version of FCP 5 and QuickTime you are running and how you got to those upgrades all.

September 16, 2005 at 1:44 pmCould be some wierdness with the Media 100 codec… dunno, but think you should be able to simply use a color corrector to bring back the original look without too much trouble.

September 16, 2005 at 2:57 pmthanks, i did actually apply a filter to work around it. what’s interesting is that the clip is fine in the source window but when you drop it on the sequence, the blacks go up. if you edit to tape, this level
shift follows but if you export the clip as a quicktime movie, it looks fine. it’s a 30 second commercial so the finished product goes to tape, but i do export the clip as a quicktime to send to the client. anyway, it’s not that much of an issue, i can work around it. but since everything i’ve done up to a month ago was done on M100, i need to break the code on it, this won’t be the last time, i’m sure.thanks for the input, we’ll see what happens.

September 16, 2005 at 4:06 pmYeah, its a problem with the Media 100 codec…FCP assumes a range of 0-255, Media 100 uses 16-235.
Unfortunately there is no good workaround. If we are not talking monstrous amounts of media, perhaps you can use Compressor to batch convert to another codec while adjusting the gamma.
