I have been able to gain some significant post-production improvements by converting video to an image sequence in Photoshop and then opening the sequence as camera raw in AE. In a few instances, I have amazed at the results of using camera raw for some… uhm… lower quality footage – particularly in recovering more detail in highlights and shadows.

Does anyone know of a way to directly open video as camera raw in After Effects? I’d like to skip the step of opening the video Photoshop and exporting as a TIF sequence.

I could probably export it from AE as a TIF sequence, then open it a camera raw, but that is still an extra step. I have tried >import > all files > camera raw, then selecting an AVI, but AE complains that it cannot parse the file.

Regular (miniDV) video. Import the video into Photoshop; export as TIF sequence; Open TIF sequence as RAW in AE.

This was covered in a tutorial several months ago, and I have been using the technique to improve some REALLY mediocre video.

I don’t think that there’s a way around that- since you do not have RAW footage (like from a RED camera) there’s no way for AE to see that as RAW and open it as such. Opening the footage in PSD and exporting TIFF sequences tricks AE and gives you the ability to improve the footage.

Why not skip the AE step? You can open the video in Photoshop, apply the Camera Raw Filter (Shift+Command+A), then export directly to ProRes for 10bit editing.
