Import poly wave files into fcp 6
Hi there !
I recorded poly wave files with a Sound Devices 788T.
I routed the inputs this way : boom to track 1 post fade and to track 3 pre fade, lavalier one to track 2 post fade and to track 4 pre fade, lavalier two to track 2 post fade and to track 5 pre fade.
In fact the mix down is the boom on track 1 and all the HF mics on the track 2. But of course I keep the Iso Tracks on 3,4 and 5 for safety.
So, if I use only one of the input, the result is a poly wave file with two channels (both mono).
If I use the three inputs, the result is a poly wave file with five channels (all mono).When I import a poly wave file with more than two channels, it is correctly interpreted by FCP as a 3 or 4 or 5 mono channels.
But when I import a two channels poly wave (say, channel 1 is boom post fade and channel 2 is boom pre fade), then FCP interprets it as a stereo wave file, which is not correct.
Then I have to “unpair” the stereo pair and to recenter both channels.
Imagine the amount of work for a project with hundreds or thousands of sound files…My question is : is there a way to force FCP to interpret a 2 mono channels poly wave file as it is instead of a stereo pair ?

No worries your english is fine.No idea about the FCP handling, but i’m pretty sure there is freeware to split a dual channel BWF into mono.
(If not, i’ll make something.)Can’t you just put the recorder in a mode it always records mono files? Should save a lot of trouble…

There is a second application included that merges your FCP qt files with the BWF audio. Should save you a lot in syncing.
If you like, i can make custom filters if you only want specific mono files attached to the QT’s.hth,

Not sure if FCP handles poly wave files that well. Use wave agent to split them.

Considering the fact to have mono files instead of poly files, it’s quite possible with the 788T. But the handling of these files for the syncing in FCP is more tedious than with “single” and simple poly files. And what upsets me is that a poly files with three or more channels is correctly interpreted but not a poly file with two channels…
It’s as if two channels automatically means stereo for FCP ! -
If all your stereo files are on the same track, you can center the panning for all the clips on those tracks. You don’t have to do it clip by clip.
Also a stereo wav file should be interpreted by FCP as a stereo file. It is not the same thing as a polyphonic wav. The alternative is to convert the stereo wavs to two mono files before importing into FCP. The tool in Jeremy’s link will do that and more.
