  • Import Illustrator to After Effects without importing whole artboard

Hi – I can’t seem to find a resolution to this (probably very simple) but annoying issue.

I’m working on After Effects (CS4) on Mac. When I bring in any asset from Illustrator (let’s say, for example, a simple vector logo), After Effects is importing the whole Illustrator artboard – which is currently A4 size. So, I’m getting a whole load of alpha around a small logo. How can I tell After Effects to only ‘see’ the object and to discard everything else?

Thing is, the project was started on another machine, which only brings in the object and automatically crops out all the blank space. Importing the same assets on the problem machine – I get the whole artboard.

This is probably a simple preference somewhere, but I can’t for the life of me find it…

    Please help…

    Thanks in advance.

I think I remember a tip I read a while back about using crop marks in Illustrator to control the size of what imports. I know that this works with importing to 3D Studio, and I think it also works with AE. Good luck!

Yep. Cropping is the first suggestion mentioned here:

Import file as composition- layer size. This will bring in the vector art on each layer at it’s own size, without the artboard around. Also, sizing down the artboard helps, if you got a lot of empty space around.
