—- when collecting footage from Premiere Pro onto an external hard drive I was asked if an AVI was ok.
Not being sure as to whether or not this output would be compressed i n some way I opted for a targa sequence which took a bit longer ( I think ? ).
Editor looked a bit puzzled as to why I should bother ( ”…we do broadcast shows like this ….” ) and am wondering if Premiere Pro has a default AVI setting which is uncompressed — also curious to know what the default file format is for P Pro as well if someone could comment please.
This is not a problem as such but if anyone has a definative answer would much appreciate it so I know better for next time.

As you suggested, just knowing that you’d get an AVI file is not enough information. You need to know the codec as well. It’s like asking for an MOV file without specifying a codec; you might get ProRes or Animation, or you might get H.264 or AIC.

Yes, Premiere Pro has an uncompressed AVI setting.

There is no default file format for PrP. You use whatever fits you or your client needs.
AVI and QuickTime are just wrappers for the various codecs that reside within. These codecs determine the degree and kind of compression used.
Many folks choose to use the industry standards of Prores (only available on the Mac) or DNxHD, developed by Avid. Both are available wrapped in QT.
I recently chose to master to OP1a AVC-I 100. This is wrapped in MXF which is 2x faster when exporting from PrP then any QT wrapped codec.
Though its not yet considered an industry standard.Tom Daigon
