iMovie QT being cropped by FCP
My wife made a slide-show in iMovie that I’ve been trying to get into a larger project on FCP.
First I tried exporting a mov file from iMovie and it works in the timeline, but it crops the bottom third off the picture. I go into the Motion folder and the scale is at 88%, I drop it down to 80% to get the whole picture, but it still crops the bottom third off. I messed with the scale and the distort, with no help, it stays the same. When you look at the original in the Viewer, the whole picture is there.
I tried exporting a m4v file and then converting it to an mov file with MPEG Streamclip, but it came up with the same results.
When I dropped the m4v file into FCP, I get the whole picture, no cropping, but there’s a 2 to 1 rendering time… which I may have to deal with.
I’ve never seen this cropping issue come up before in almost 10 years of FCP. Any ideas? I’d like to fix it and know how to fix it if it comes up again.

You told us what was wrong Ross, but you gave us nothing we can use to help figure out where you went wrong. To help you, we’ll need the pixel dimensions of the original. Was your wife’s iMovie export 320×240, 720×480, 1920×1080, or __________? Without knowing the answer precisely we can’t help you, we’d only be guessing.

Please, can you share any detail about the clip (pixels, aspect,..) and the sequence setting?

Doesn’t iMovie have XML export capability?

The iMovie export is DV, 720×480, the sequence is set to 720×480 NTSC DV, Anamorphic
I’ll try the XML output. I already rendered the m4v file… but I want to know why it’s having trouble with the .mov

You can open iMovie projects directly with FC.
The problem is that iMovie is not TC based, so you never knows, but no harm on trying and see how FC does.
