  • Images shake after rendering

Posted by Richard Haddad on September 3, 2008 at 4:51 pm

We noticed this new issue after using FCP for some time on one of our workstations.
Even on a slide show with still frames and simple Ken Burns motion the canvas displays the sequence just fine until we render it. Once rendered, the image starts to jump up and down slightly — as if you are looking out the window of a fast car on a bumpy road.
We’ve tried resetting all the preferences to match other computers running successfully, and this is the only workstation that has this playback error.
Our next step will be to reload FCP onto the machine if necessary, but I would love to solve this mystery if anyone has seen this happen before.

[Richard Haddad] “Our next step will be to reload FCP onto the machine if necessary, but I would love to solve this mystery if anyone has seen this happen before.

Probably not a solution. Reloading FCP rarely cures anything but you can always trash your most recent QT receipts and force those updates to reload form apple’s software update system.

You’ve got to figure out if the rendered QT file is the problem or if it’s the machine or the display on the machine. If it’s the QT file itself, an up and down, one-pixel shake should be visible as a field problem if you show your canvas at 800%.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

This error is occurring even when viewed in the timeline and before exporting the file. For example, when we drag a photo into the timeline and set a motion frame, it looks great. If we then pull down from the menu bar — Sequence>Render All>Both — and then we play it in the canvas, we see the image jumping up and down. This jumping and shake stays in the exported products whether we export to QT or as an .flv file using a plug-in.
If you think throwing away something related to QuickTime will help, I am happy to try it. I’m just a little confused on exactly what to throw away and were to find it. This is a new issue that suddenly appeared about two weeks ago. Before that we used this workstation regularly with no render errors.

Here’s a long shot. Is your render mode set to 10bit? You can find this in the sequence settings under video processing. If so try changing it to 8bit and see if that makes difference.

    cheers,

I’m having the same issue and nothing seems to work! I’m making a simple side show with some Ken Burns effects and cross dissolves. Soon as I render and try to play back in the timeline the images shake up and down? I thought this might just be in the timeline but it occurs when I export as well? Any new solutions anyone came up with?!?! Seems like it should be a simple fix but i can’t figure it out 🙁

The only thing that we can guess is that it was related to RAM. We ended up expanding the RAM in that workstation and the issue stopped. We never figured it out for sure, but the shaking stopped.

I have had the same issue on the last two slideshow’s. when i remove the Ken Burns effects i built, it seems to go away. looks as if the resolution is wrong or when it moves at a slight angle the res. lines start to show. it really seems to pick out the white in the images.and it’s not on all the images’ only just a few . I have tried using Anti Alias filter with no resolve. Can’t seem to be able to change the resolution. My system i’m using is an 17″ mac book pro with max ram. I would think that a slideshow would be something that that FCP could handle.

p.s can someone give advice on what might help.

    Thank you in advance

I’ve had the same problem, this solved it:
right click(ctrl click) the image on the timeline -> go to speed -> uncheck frameblending.

You are truly the man. This solved my problem also, a slideshow for my producer’s father’s memorial that I had to complete today. Thanks!!

Unfortunately the frame blending solution didn’t work for me, but using the pen tool and doing dissolves manually that way did. Just thought I’d add in case someone else ran into the same problem!
