image “squeezing” problem
hi,
I’m having a weird trouble w final cut pro. sometimes when I import a dvpro/dv-ntsc movie clip into a final cut file, the image gets “squeezed” vertically. the horizontal is ok but top & bottom are squished. ending up w a stretched look. (like silly putty)
problem could come from file which was made from dsc stills into an animated movie via a compiling program, but I think (I think) it has happened before w non-animated movies too.
also have this trouble if I copy and paste a movie clip into a NEW final cut file.
any ideas???

Where did the “dvpro/dv-ntsc movie clip” come from, After Effects, QuickTime Pro?
Was the render set for D1 NTSC DV (720 x 480) non-square pixels?
I think we need a little more information here.

hi,
compiling program is called “framesplicer” and comes in a package deal with the framegrabbing program “framethief”
yes indeed it was set for 720 X 480 I simply get a slightly letterboxed frame with black at top & bottom. not so much as 16×9 but just a little bit.
D1 is not marked anywhere. framesplicer is not as tailored as after effects.
I chose the DV/DVCPRO-NTSC option. I could choose 4:3 aspect (which I did)
or could choose 16:9
could it possibly have something to do w the camera I use?
SONY PDX-10 which has a 1/4.7″ native 16:9 chip
have also had the same trouble w DSC inages which are supposed to be in perfect scale.I am capable of cropping/scaling the quicktime movie that I get from dsc images (in after effects) down to proper size and THEN importing THAT movie into final cut, works fine …but takes a lot longer.

I noticed that FrameThief 2.1.9 is dated April 15, 2003. All the screen shots appear to be Mac Classic OS 8.x, 9.2.x. I think this is less of an issue with FCP and more with FrameThief which according to their web site doesn’t need FrameSplicer anymore.
What special needs do you have with FrameThief in stitching together animation frames that you don’t get from the more QuickTime intelligent program like After Effects.
Are the still shots coming from the SONY PDX-10? If not, digital still cameras have a different aspect ratio than DV video. You would have to use a program like AE to size and crop for output to DV.
I would read this article and perhaps it will give more insight.

Without seeing what you are describing it is a little hard to track down your issues. On one sidebar note I will say that if a QuickTime DV movie doesn’t match the 720 x 480 FCP is expecting it will distort it to fit in a DV timeline. For a DV timeline putting a value of -12.5 in the Distort value under the Motion tab for a clip in the Viewer may result in the correct aspect in FCP for video, but may require some scaling or cropping.
