  • Image quality for videogame footage

    Hi everyone.

I’ve been using a multibridge pci express since almost a year now for videogame footage and I’m not satisfied with the image quality in 720p. The capture just look way too soft instead of being sharp like it should be.
Take a look at this capture:

And how it should look like:

While the capture doesn’t look bad, it does look as you’d expect it to look like for game footage.
Is there any simple solution for this (I doubt it), or should I look for a component -> hd-sdi converter or even use a completely different solution?
Some sites capture footage with perfect sharpness so there must be a way, I just don’t know how :/

Thanks in advance for any help 🙂

    Hello,

The image in 720p looks fine to me. What you might want to do is use a Gaming graphics card with software such as Asus which allows you to record from the game to an AVI video file I believe. The software is on the CD the graphics card it comes with on specific models which has the game capture video recording tools.

    Thanks,

That’s not really the best image to show what’s wrong with the capture I guess.
Maybe this one will show the problem better:

Look at how the font looks soft. It should be very sharp but it’s all fuzzy. Same with the formation thing. I guess I want a more computer like image instead of a video like one, or something like that.
I record this from Xbox 360 and PS3 game consoles, so using such utilities isn’t an option 😉

    Hello,

How are you capturing from your X-Box 360 and Playstation units? Into the Decklink and what connections and compressions?

    Thanks,

    Leo

I’m capturing directly from the component outputs of both consoles into the multibridge, using the uncompressed 4:2:2 codec.

    Hello,

Well if you are going component out of the games machines into the component in on the Multibridge then I do not see any way of getting better quality images.

If using the Uncompressed 4:2:2 SD then the images should be very sharp. I can only think that it is the games units which are limiting the qulaity when it’s going to the Multibridge.

    Thanks,

    Leo

    Hi!

I use a component switch to output the image to both my HDTV (native 720p DLP) and the multibridge. The image is perfectly sharp on the TV, not on the PC. Of course I’ve also tried hooking up the game console directly to the PC, with the same result.
I’ve seen the same result from other users capturing from the same devices as me, so to me it’s either the multibridge/decklink that doesn’t get a perfectly sharp image (by design maybe, so it looks more “video”), or there is no way to get a better image from a component input but some american site get perfectly sharp captures so I don’t know what to think. I thought they were using VGA, but they also get the same quality with the PS3 that doesn’t have VGA outputs.

I really don’t know what to think anymore. I’d like to buy a card from some other manufacturer, but if I get the same result then I’ve lost $1500 :/

    Hello,

I just tested capturing from the Analogue Component out of the Sony Play Station 2 to the Analogue component input of the Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme. I Captured the video file to the following compression level.

    10 bit 4:2:2 un-compressed SD
    720×576 25fps.

The results looked perfect to me. I have uploaded a clip for you to look at in Windows Media Player.

    Hello,

I do not have the BNC convertors from my Sony PS2 to do a test here to the Multibridge Extreme via component capture. It should be a very shapr, image U am not sure why it would be looking soft? Perhaps something to do with the hz frame rate etc of the games console it is outputting maybe?

    Thanks,

    Leo

    Hello,

I have found the BNC convertors to go from my component analogue out from the Sony PS2. I will test capturing to 10 bit uncompressed 4:2:2 at SD 720×576 PAL 50hz. I will let you know how I get on and post the results for you to see how it looks here as well.

    Thanks,

    Leo

The graphics in the PS2, if I’m not wrong are standar MPG2 of DVD quality, and what you get in your video-out (component or composite) is just an standar PAL or NTSC sgnal. If you want to capture thr graphics properly you have to do it in a similar format (size). If you capture them in 720p I think you are blowing the imae up and you will get bad results. I think Leo is getting a nice image because is keeping the original size (720×576) and frame rate.
    Salud,
    Rafael
