[supervideo] “The Imac not only meets all of them but also exceeds most of them .So there is no reason why final cut should not work exactly as the features stated”

You meet the “General System Requirements.” That does not mean you’ll get all the features of the software, such as a lot of realtime, on your system. The General System Requirements means that the software will and does operate on that system. It does not say anything about the type of performance you will receive on each machine.

More power, more drive speed equal faster and more performance from FCP.

hi thanks for the reply ! sounds like somthing to try but what do you suggest i use for video
storage on the Imac and also do you think adding another 512 o f memory could make a differance ? I would be happy if i can get my stuff to play even in low quailty just to judge
before i render .from what i read on the apple web site about final cut ..I thought that this was a very good feature the program has ..and that it would just scale down quailty to give you a smooth preview even if i add filters and more streams of video .There is nothing on thier web site that says final cut will only give you this feature if you have a strong enough computer .. I f it works it should work as long as your computer has what they say is
the reccomended system .As far as the overall sluggishness like the mouse not keeping up .
I could live with that !

    Walter…

Realistically, I think it comes down to what you’re using it for. I’ll tell you one thing: you can throw all the spec’s at me you want, but the iMac Intel does NOT feel anything like a laptop to me. And it blows away other G5’s I’m currently working on. And I don’t think anyone somewhat informed would be buying an iMac for expandibility.

It’s an amazing machine for a lower budget. Enough said. I think that should be supported and encouraged. Not everyone can afford to buy an new G5 every 6 months.

I have yet to hear anything bad about the iMac and FCS except when talking about expandibility. Not everyone needs that.

Cut lo-res if you need to. Problem solved. It’s the editing that matters in my world. Not the final polish.

Do you mean a single processor? I’m done with those. I’m working on a single G5 right now and the spinning beachballs are driving me batty. I prefer the responsiveness of the iMac.

Until the Intel towers come along, I’m perfectly happy with lo-res cutting.

    But I’m cutting, not onlining.

    supervideo…

To tell you the absolute truth, I would’ve gone lo-res with this workflow, b/c that’s what I’m used to. I haven’t yet cut HDV on the iMac, but I’ve seen it play back perfectly. Now you said you were getting stuttering from playback and I did NOT see that at all (and I notice any and every dropped frame).

I’ll check with someone I know who just cut a project on HDV and let you know what the story is.

What I personally love about the iMac is:

    a) the display

    b) the size

    c) the lack of clutter

    d) the Intel DUAL core processor

    e) the amazing responsiveness, which just blows away single processor G5’s, from my experience.

    f) the PRICE.

I’ve had decent experience with Mac’s and FCP (since v.1.0) and I can tell you this is the first iMac I even looked at with interest. And for some reason, I don’t think you’re getting the most out of it. But go read other threads, here and elsewhere, and you’ll see that people with Quads are getting dropped frames. There are so many variables.

    ‘Nuff said.

[walter biscardi] “You can’t use the internal drive for video capture / playback as you will not get consistent playback off a single internal drive that runs the OS, Software and media. You MUST use a separate media drive for editing with Final Cut Pro. Add to all of that, your internal drive is probably a 5400 RPM drive, which is not sufficient for constant video editing.”

I *think* the iMac HD’s are all 7200 rpm.

I’ve used DV25 from an internal system drive on a Dual G5 and it worked MUCH better than from a FW drive.

According the Apple site, you are correct. That’s something I have not seen since they changed it.

I would use an external firewire 800 drive for HDV storage.

Yes but I dont think the Imacs firewire is 8oo spec its 400 ?

Correct – 400. You can buy a 2 drive like a :acie Big disk and get decent performance in firewire 400 but not even close to 800 which your nachine doesn’t have. I’ve played with the iMac at the Apple store and it worked fine with HDV – you’ve got to get all your footage onto the fastest external firewire drive you can find.

I don’t know your budget but you may consider exchanging for a PowerMac. I also cut on PC on a dualcore 3.2 with PPro 2 and Vegas 6 (I’m a beta tester for both Adobe and Sony). I just bought a G5 Quad for a job along with a 30″ monitor and I can tell you there is just so much more you can do in FCP – while there are features in Vegas and PPro I wish FCP had, overall it’s just awesome. I’ve edited off and on in FCP since version1 and was never really impressed until I got the Quad and the larger monitor – it’s by far the best hardware/software/OS combo I’ve ever used.

    Don’t give up.
