I’m such a newb…HEEELLLPPP! Multiple formats not playing well
Hello all. I just transfered to FCP from a to be left nameless PC program. I’ve not had to many issues with simple stuff until now. I have a project for a client that involves modifying a previous project I had done for her at my old job. I am creating a tradeshow loop out of analogue captured DVD footage(can’t get the masters, DVD is all I have), as well as some newly shot HDV footage that I’m using on another project for her. I need to combine my HDV footage with the DVD footage. I’ve captured the DVD footage via component using a Kona codec. It’s not the greatest but it’s all I have. I am having trouble getting the two formats to play nicely. Should I be setting my sequence settings as SD or HDV. Depending on which one I use, one or the other looks crappy on my output monitor. The final product will only be on DVD. Maybe I should just recapture the HDV footage as down rezzed SD from the camera. Any help would be appreciated.

HDV is not an easy format to mix with anything else as it’s a Long GOP format and everything else you’re going to use will most like be quicktime.
My advice is capture the HDV footage in DV mode and mix that in to an 8Bit SD timeline. If your drives are fast enough, you should be able to edit in realtime.
If your camera has component out, you can also capture directly through the Kona at 8bit SD to match the codecs.

One more question. After doing a search on the topic of using DVD footage, I found a recent thread describing a process using conversion software to change the TS files on the DVD into .mov files. Will I achieve better quality using this method or simply capturing the video via component from a DVD player.
