I’m not sure how to describe this let alone recreate it!
I thought that I was pretty good at spotting techniques and how the “magic” was done when it came to most VFX work. This one had me stumped, though.
I’m trying to recreate an emoji head over a live actor, getting full facial expressions to move with the actor as he/she rotates and shifts from side to side. (AKA turning their head) all whilst the emoji head remains flat and in 2d.
here is the example of what I’m talking about.
I can’t tell if something other than AE is being used here. I’m familiar with the work of this team and I haven’t seen anything like this come from them before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is getting worse than getting an old pop-song stuck in your head and, for the life of you, you can’t remember the artist. Please help me regain my sanity.

I would say… Something like what he does in this tutorial…
Combined with some roto when the guy turns completely around.
