> No computer can really provide enough power to preview full HD files(1080p) in real time for an editor
Getting back to your earlier comment… I preview HDV and AVCHD files at full frame rates in Vegas Pro 9.0c on my QuadCore with 8GB of memory every day. You didn’t say what format your 1080p files are or where they came from but my hunch is that Vegas is not optimized to work with this type of footage yet.
So, where did you get 1080p footage from and what codec do they use? This may be the key to your trouble.
> How do I optimize Vegas to use all of the computer power?
One thing is to not make Vegas do any unnecessary work. Since you said your footage was 1080p and Vegas doesn’t have a project for 1080p, which template did you use? If you are using an interlaced template, then Vegas is interlacing all of your 1080p footage on the fly which is asking it to do a lot of work for nothing. Make sure that your project is 1080p. In fact, I would use the Match Media option in the project properties to make sure that the project matches the source footage.
Also set your RAM preview back ot it’s defaults if you changed it. Any memory used for preview is not available for other tasks.
> I am nearly convinced, that the problem is Vegas not using it, hence the “loss of memory available”.
Something else to consider is that you have hit a bug or limitation. Earlier versions of Vegas would die after about 90 HDV clips were placed on the timeline. Newer versions fixed that but then dies with about 90 AVCHD clips on the timeline. The latest version is now handling that. As I said, you didn’t say what format your 1080p footage is but you may have hit the next limitation with how many of those clips can be on the timeline.
Try my suggestion with matching the project settings. If that doesn’t help, I would contact Sony Technical Support and work with them. You may have found something that they have not encountered yet and needs to be addressed by Sony?
