Is there a reason to prefer this one over the other brands out there?

you got Other World Computing, you got Highpoint, you got Sonnet.
Those are your choices. Oh yea, Cal Digit too.
They all work, they are all great, they are all inexpensive.

It seems like the Highpoint one is both a dock and a device i can run an internal hard drive from. For that reason, it seems like a better fit than any of the other Thunderbolt docks. It’s more versatile. Am i wrong?

It is a Dock only in the sense that you can take 2 bare hard drives and pop them in there like a toaster, and they’ll mount to your desktop. I have this unit, and it’s handy as hell.
Other products marketed as docks have other ports / features like ethernet, analog audio, eSATA, USB 3, HDMI, FireWire 800, etc.
The HighPoint only has one Thunderbolt port, so it needs to live on the end of your chain. It only does the two-drive boogie, none of the other stuff.
